Retro Snake: rules, controls and strategy
Retro Snake uses a 30 by 20 logical grid. The snake begins moving to the right, grows by one segment whenever it eats food, and speeds up gradually. A run ends when the head crosses a wall or enters the occupied body, except that moving into the tail cell being vacated on that step is handled correctly.
Rules
- Eat food to grow and earn points.
- Do not cross the outer wall.
- Do not collide with the snake's occupied body.
- A direction cannot reverse directly into the previous segment.
- Food always spawns on an unoccupied cell.
Keyboard, pointer and touch controls
Use the arrow keys, the four on-screen direction buttons, or swipe on the canvas. Press Space or P, or use the visible Pause button, to pause and resume.
Scoring and saving
Each food item adds 10 points. The movement rate begins at 10 steps per second and rises toward 18 as food is collected. The best signed-in score is sent through the backend; guest play remains local to the current run.
Scores from browser games are bounded and synchronized by the backend, but local game outcomes are client-authoritative unless this guide explicitly identifies server-owned match evidence.
Beginner guidance
- Use long lanes and turn before reaching the wall.
- Keep empty space on both sides of the head.
- Avoid rapid opposite-key presses; direct reversal is intentionally rejected.
- Pause before responding to an interruption instead of abandoning the tab.
Advanced strategy
- Follow a broad serpentine route that preserves access to the full board.
- Treat the tail as moving space and plan where it will be next step.
- Do not enclose food inside a body loop without an exit.
- At higher speed, decide the next two turns before reaching a corner.
Common mistakes
- Looking only at food and missing the wall.
- Building tight spirals too early.
- Swiping diagonally and expecting two turns.
- Trying to reverse direction in a single update.
Accessibility notes
The same game is operable with keyboard, pointer buttons, or swipe. Score and state are text, controls have accessible names, and the responsive canvas preserves its logical grid without requiring pinch gestures.
Troubleshooting
- If a key does not turn the snake, it may be an illegal reverse.
- If swipes are ignored, start on the canvas and travel at least a short cell distance.
- If the game appears frozen, check the Pause state.
- Reload only after noting the final score; active runs are not restored.
Retro Snake FAQ
Can food appear inside the snake?
No. Spawn selection excludes occupied cells.
Why does the game speed up?
Each food item increases the update rate slightly.
Can I move into the old tail position?
Yes, when the tail vacates that position on the same non-growing step.
