2048: rules, controls and strategy
2048 is a planning puzzle played on a 4 by 4 board. Every move slides all tiles in one direction; equal neighbors merge once, and a new tile appears only after a move changes the board. The immediate goal is the 2048 tile, but the implementation lets you continue afterward and build a larger score.
Rules
- A move affects the entire board, not one tile.
- Two equal tiles that collide become one tile worth their sum.
- A tile created by a merge cannot merge again during that same move.
- A new tile appears only after a valid move.
- The run ends when no horizontal or vertical merge or empty cell remains.
Keyboard, pointer and touch controls
Use the four arrow keys. On touch screens, swipe across the board in the direction you want every tile to move.
Scoring and saving
Each merge adds the value of the new tile to the score. Combining two 128 tiles therefore adds 256. Signed-in results synchronize through the backend; guests keep the current board in local browser storage.
Scores from browser games are bounded and synchronized by the backend, but local game outcomes are client-authoritative unless this guide explicitly identifies server-owned match evidence.
Beginner guidance
- Keep your largest tile in one corner and avoid moving away from that edge without a reason.
- Build a descending row toward the chosen corner.
- Prefer moves that preserve empty cells.
- Pause before a swipe; accidental direction changes are costly.
Advanced strategy
- Use three directions most of the time and treat the fourth as an emergency move.
- Plan merge order so a newly created tile does not block the next pair.
- Watch the entire insertion edge before committing.
- Continue beyond 2048 only when the corner chain remains stable.
Common mistakes
- Chasing the nearest merge instead of board shape.
- Alternating opposite directions and scattering high tiles.
- Filling the top row with unrelated values.
- Assuming a tile can merge twice in one move.
Accessibility notes
The board exposes grid and grid-cell semantics, the score is text, and keyboard play needs no pointer precision. Reduced-motion preferences are respected by the shared game shell.
Troubleshooting
- If arrow keys scroll the page, click the board once and retry.
- If a swipe is ignored, use a longer single-direction gesture.
- Use New Game to clear a damaged local run.
- A sync warning does not erase local play; sign in again and finish a later run to retry.
2048 FAQ
Do I have to stop at 2048?
No. Choose Continue after reaching the target.
Why did only one pair merge?
Each original tile can participate in only one merge per move.
Can I undo?
This version does not provide undo, so each move is final.
